THE GROUNDS

AT BLACK WALNUT FARM

Open meadows, wooded paths, and quiet corners give the property its sense of ease, and its sense of scale. Cocktail hour spills outside, conversations wander, and guests naturally find their way from a hidden outdoor bar to a round of giant Jenga, to a roaring bonfire .

Our grounds create a pastoral, rustic setting, and our landscaping style embraces the natural beauty of a historic farm. We have four gardens around the property, inspired by the English gardening style: very organic/natural, a little bit wild, with lots of native flowering plants and shrubs, indigenous wildflowers, clover, and climbing roses. Explore the grounds a bit more and you’ll discover rustic elements like moss-covered rocks and a small pond with wild aquatic plants, alongside antique French stone benches and the odd tucked-away statue.

Lawns and borders are kept neat but not overly manicured– a very formal feel just doesn’t fit the vibe of the farm. Our meadows feature long native grasses and wildflowers meant to nurture our monarch butterfly community.

Our landscaping team is led by our Farm Caretaker and Head Gardener (and self-described ‘Permaculture Baddie’), Kelsea Beck.
